Makeup Brushes 101

The Simple Answer to “Which Brushes do I Need?”

Makeup brushes are super, uber important when it comes to makeup application. But, like everything else at Pop of Pink, simplicity is key. I find the ones that make the most sense and keep makeup application easy – and then bring them to my Pop of Pink gals!
I know a good brush set is an investment, but I assure you, when you come in for a lesson, I do not overwhelm you with brushes you truly won’t use. Each of the Pop of Pink brushes serves a purpose and with simple cleaning every so often, they will last a long, long time. Here’s some info on each of the Pop of Pink brushes, which are all labeled with their names to make it easy to find and use. I hope this helps answer any questions you might have about the brushes I use and suggest. Remember, I’m always here for a lesson, social or a quick question.

Wash Brush – This big, fluffy eye shadow application brush makes it simple to apply a wash of color across the entire lid – hence its name. It also is a great blender brush to soften the shadow colors you choose to wear.

Wet/Dry Brush – Wearing eye shadow wet may be a new technique to some of you, but it truly makes the color pop and adhere very nicely to your lid. I teach and encourage customers to wet the brush, tap it off on a towel and go into the shadow and apply it. Wet or dry, this synthetic brush makes it easy to apply shadow in an impactful way, and it also helps you to blend shadows easily, too. The Wet/Dry brush is a must!

Defining Brush – If you want to keep things very defined and precise, this is the brush for you. I use this a lot to blend out my eyeliner. I teach my ladies to apply liner with a pencil, and then use a brush to blend it out. I use my Wet/Dry Brush sometimes for very soft look or I use the Defining Brush for a more defined eye.

Blending Brush –This brush is mainly used for highlighter powder under your eyes. Or you can use a separate one to blend eye shadow. Tip: you will want two brushes so eye shadow doesn’t mix in with your highlighter.

Powder Brush – The Powder brush is super soft, feels luxurious, and will last a long time. It applies powder evenly and provides great all-over coverage.

Blush Brush – It’s just super simple, also very soft and applies blush evenly and easily.

Bronzer Brush –This brush is a little denser, so you get more color. A great brush to invest in as we’re approaching summertime.

Brow Brush – You can buy this little guy separately or get it in my brow kit. It has the spooly on one side to brush your brows into place and the other side to apply the color. An essential tool!

These are my go-to brushes. Every once-in-a-while, I’ll add a new brush, but keeping your makeup routine simple is key at Pop of Pink.

Please, don’t forget to clean your brushes every month or so. Sometimes I think we don’t realize how old our brushes are or how long it has been since we’ve cleaned them. When you replace an old brush or simply clean them, you’ll be amazed at much better the color will go on.

To clean brushes, you just need a small amount of Dawn dish soap and warm water. Lather up the brushes and then rinse thoroughly. Reshape and lay them flat on a towel to dry completely for about 6 hours. Now you can rest easy that they are bacteria-free, which also helps to extend the life of your makeup!

Brushes are key to the entire makeup look. Contact me for a lesson or a fun social with friends where I can show you personally how to use each of these brushes to enhance your beauty routine. Thanks for reading, ladies!

Spring blooms new color

Pop of Pink Cosmetics chooses new, spring shades

Happy spring! This winter was warm everywhere, so it feels like we’ve been on the verge of spring for a while. Now we’re happily here!

I love the change of seasons all year round, but there is something about the new life in spring that awakens the color lover in me. I’ve been thinking about my new Spring/Summer Face Kit – Summertime Flirt – for a while and inspiration is striking me from different places.

The color discovery process is definitely a journey. I start off in one direction with color and then wind my way to another palette. Because I want just the perfect color combo for my Pop of Pink gals, a lot of thought and planning must go into the color selections for each Face Kit.

I go into each Face Kit creation with the goal to create a palette that’s easy to use, but I also want my seasonal Face Kits to get you ladies out of your comfort zone a little – think the lilac from last year’s spring kit and the glittery green from Holiday Glitz. Basically, I want to make it simple for you to try something a little unexpected and creative while still looking and feeling like yourself.

This spring/summer I’m thinking a simple eye with a great pop of color on the lip. It’s simplicity mixed with a fun shot of color. My spring/summer lip colors offer a range of spring beauty – from pinks to corals, and from bold and bright to more subdued, but vibrant hues.

For the eye, I’ve been inspired by a pretty soft blue eye – DO NOT think ‘80s blue eye shadow! Think soft blue with a hint of gray. The color combo highlights different eye colors in such dramatically different ways.

The color experts, Pantone, created a sweet spring palette with a soft blue, Niagara, that I love. They say that Niagara is leading their color choices this year, and I agree. The Pantone palette also includes two pink options – a lively and festive Pink Yarrow and a tranquil Pale Dogwood. I love a color palette that works well with any mood – from creative and whimsical to relaxed and peaceful.

I know many of you are eagerly awaiting the reveal of Summertime Flirt and I’m nearly there. It will be worth the wait, I promise!

In the meantime, now is the time to pull that bronzer back out, if you took a break from it during the winter months. Also, consider tweaking your foundation as you get a little bit of color while enjoying the outdoors.

Enjoy the spring, ladies! Get creative, get bold and be inspired!

Spring Cleaning:

Makeup Shelf Life

Is anyone else getting the urge to clean out and freshen up? Spring makes me ready for new growth and bright colors! It’s a great time to pull out those bold, bright lipsticks and soft spring clothes, BUT it’s also the perfect time to shed some of the old ... .

I’m talking about cleaning out the makeup drawer, ladies.

We all have those eye shadow and lipstick colors we just love and hate to throw away, but there is a time when we must. The more natural the ingredients, the more quickly they expire -  especially if they’re free of preservatives, like paraben.

I know we don’t want to think about it, but bacteria do grow in those cute containers, and bacteria can irritate skin or even make us sick. Mascara is one of the worst culprits!

Here are some timelines I go by:
Liquid or cream makeup, like foundation, concealer and lipstick – 1 year
Powder makeup, eye shadow, blush, etc.  – 1 – 1 ½ years
Mascara – 3 months (NO LONGER!)
If you are using a paraben-free product, consider cutting the time even shorter. Some suggest six months. Remember, paraben-free is great for your skin, so ditching those products in a shorter amount of time is still worth it. Your skin will thank you!

Another key piece of makeup spring cleaning is caring for your makeup brushes. I suggest cleaning them once a month. It’s super easy and makes a big difference in the look of your makeup, the health of your skin, and it improves the longevity of your brushes.

Saying goodbye can be hard, but think of your skin AND think of the room you’ll have to fill with some new beauties! Happy spring and spring cleaning, gals!

from Guest Blogger Nicole Gerrard

Once one of Stacy’s models at a social, Nicole was drawn to Stacy’s story and became hooked on Pop of Pink. The deep pigmented color of Pop of Pink products, the quality of the shadows, and the versatility of the color palettes are what drew Nicole to the makeup line. She’s now a Pop of Pink Independent Distributor proudly helping women to look and feel beautiful. She’s a creative soul who is always in project mode – whether it’s remodeling a home or trying a new look. And as if that weren’t enough to keep her busy, she’s also mom to twin five-year-olds and a toddler. Located in Cypress, Texas, Nicole is your source for Pop of Pink Cosmetics.

I recently had a conversation with a friend about a “make-up rut.” This got us talking about how often women should update their look. Let’s face it ladies, we change. Our eyes may not be as perky. Our lips may be a little thinner. Wrinkles could be affecting our make-up application. The list goes on!

Here are some ways to avoid a make-up rut:

1. Declutter If you have not used a product for six months, you aren’t going to. Toss it. I’m not talking that one lipstick you just love to wear at Christmas.

2. Organize Put your make-up in one place where you will see it all. A drawer is a great option. I love a beautiful display on a vanity.

3. Get Inspired This may mean surfing the internet for something that clicks. It could mean taking note of colors you’re drawn to. Beauty inspiration is everywhere!

4. Let Go of Fear It’s fixable. So you put a bit too much eye shadow on? Fixable. You blinked so hard from stabbing your eye with a mascara wand and now have imprints all around your eye? Fixable. You don’t think you’ll be able to “do it like she does.” Yes, you can. This is where lessons are most important.

5. Don’t Follow Fads for the Sake Of Following Fads If you think Sharpie eyebrows are crazy, then don’t be stupid. Just don’t do it. Make-up should enhance what we have, not take away who we are. Stay true to yourself, and if you have to question it, then perhaps it’s not you! You can always start with a classic look and build from there.

6. Embrace Change Do you have 15 lipsticks all in the mauve range? Stop that! Don’t be silly. You may be beautiful in mauve, but I bet you’re beautiful in dozens of other shades or even a nude lip! If you are comfortable with doing your eyes, but never change your lips, it’s time to flip flop. Try down playing your eyes and enhancing your lips. Perhaps wear your blush a tad higher with those new lips!

7. Be Versatile I think every woman should have at least four looks she feels good about.

8. Embrace the Pop of Pink Face Kit Do you hate guessing which colors play well together? Pop of Pink Face Kits are your friend and easy on-the-go.

9. Take Care of Your Skin A bad skincare routine and/or products can affect your make-up. This is especially obvious when applying foundation and concealers. The right amount of exfoliating and moisturizing is important for bright, healthy skin.

10. Now treat yourself to something new! I’m in love with Pop of Pink Cosmetics! I love helping women feel beautiful and giving them the tools to do it themselves.

STAY SIMPLE. CREATE EXPRESSION. BE GLAMOROUS.
